They were invented 60 years ago!

This year marks the 60th anniversary of the first inflatable structure, which was designed in 1959 by an electrical engineer, John Scurlock in Louisiana, USA. John’s actually stumbled on his invention when he was creating an infallible cover for a project and saw his children enjoyed jumping on it. From there, he designed a number of inflatable structures including inflatable domes, inflatable tents, inflatable signs and safety air cushions.

They have many other names

Although we here in Australia know them best as ‘jumping castles’ they have many other names. According to Wikipedia, they can also be called closed inflatable trampolines (CITs), bouncy houses, bouncies, bounce houses, bouncy castles, astrojumps, moon bounces, Spacewalks, boingalows, moonwalks, jolly jumps, or jumpers. I think we’ll stick to ‘jumping castles’ thanks!

They are not only castles

The name jumping castle is a broad term used to describe these inflatable structures, but today, there are many designs available beyond castes – just look at our range for example!

Some are designed for games

Today, there are inflatable structures that are designed to allow much more than just jumping.  You can get all sorts of inflatables now; super slides, obstacle challenges, obstacle courses, bungy fun runs, water slides are just some that we have here at The Fun Team. But, I’ve also seen boxing rings, tug of war and other interactive games.

Conclusion

There is no denying that jumping castles are incredible fun and bring a lot of joy to children of all ages. But did you know, they have been around for 60 years and have many different names! Moreover, jumping castles are not just castles! They can come in a range of designs and some are not even designed specifically for jumping – they can be designed for interactive games as well.
